Webflow: Visual Design Control on a Hosted Platform

Webflow gives designers close control over layout without hand-writing code, and runs the hosting for you. The trade-off shows up when you want to leave.

What Webflow is

Webflow is a hosted website platform built around a visual designer. Instead of picking a template and filling in blocks, you place and style elements on a canvas that maps closely to how web pages are actually built, with boxes, grids and classes. A content system called the Webflow CMS stores repeatable items such as blog posts, team profiles or case listings in "Collections", and pages pull from those Collections automatically.

That approach suits people who think visually but want precise results. It also asks more of them than a simple drag-and-drop builder. Someone with no feel for layout can find the designer harder to learn than Wix or Squarespace, while a designer who knows web layout can produce work that would otherwise need a developer.

Plans and prices

Webflow separates site plans, which pay for hosting one website, from ecommerce plans, which add a store. The official pricing page shows every plan card with yearly billing; the page has a monthly toggle, but the cards we read did not show monthly figures, so the prices below are the yearly-billed rates.

Webflow plan prices in USD per site, per month, billed yearly, as shown on November 4, 2026
PlanPriceTransaction fee on sales
Starter (site)FreeNot a store plan
Basic (site)$15Not a store plan
Premium (site)$25Not a store plan
Standard (ecommerce)$292%
Plus (ecommerce)$740%
Advanced (ecommerce)$2120%

The pricing page adds that prices are "plus applicable taxes", and describes the transaction fee as charged "In addition to Stripe or Paypal processing fees". So a sale on the Standard plan pays Webflow's 2% and then the payment processor's own rate.

Workspace plans, which cover team seats and some account features, are priced separately from site plans. They matter for one reason in particular, covered next.

Leaving Webflow: what code export gives you

Webflow's help center is clear about code export. Two points stand out:

  • "Code export is only available on Workspace plans." A site plan alone does not let you download your code.
  • The export contains pages, styles, scripts and images, but CMS content and Collection items are not included. Collection lists appear empty and Collection pages show no content. Forms and site search stop working, and ecommerce products and checkout do not function on an exported site.

In other words, an exported Webflow site is a static copy of the design. Anything driven by the CMS has to be rebuilt somewhere else and refilled with content. The Collection items themselves can be saved: Webflow's Collection items overview describes an Export action that "saves a copy of the items as a CSV file". That gives you the words and field values, which you can import into another system, but not the templates that displayed them.

Selling with Webflow

Webflow's ecommerce plans run products, cart and checkout on the same platform as the rest of the site, so the store matches the design. The Standard plan's 2% fee is the main cost difference from the higher plans; the break-even section of the ecommerce fees guide works out the yearly sales at which Plus costs less than Standard. Stores with large catalogs or complex shipping rules sometimes find a commerce-first platform such as Shopify a better match, since that is all Shopify is built to do.

What building a Webflow site costs

The platform fee is only part of the bill if you hire someone. Branded Agency, which sells Webflow builds, gives illustrative budgets of $1,000 to $6,000 for "a limited template adaptation or small build with prepared content" by a freelancer, $5,000 to $15,000 for a defined marketing site from an agency, and $15,000 to $50,000 or more for broader custom projects. These are one seller's planning examples, not survey averages, and they leave out subscriptions and ongoing support.

Handover questions for a Webflow build

  • Will the site plan, and any Workspace plan needed for code export, be billed to your account rather than the designer's?
  • Where do contact form submissions go, and who receives them?
  • When the project ends, which logins do you receive, and is the domain registered in your name?

Strengths and limits

Strengths. Fine-grained design control without code; hosting and platform updates handled by Webflow; clean pages for marketing teams; CMS Collections that keep repeated content consistent.

Limits. A steeper learning curve than template builders; code export needs a Workspace plan and leaves CMS content, forms and the store behind; the Standard ecommerce plan adds a 2% fee; and extending the platform beyond what Webflow supports means third-party services or custom code.

Who Webflow tends to fit

Reading the facts together, Webflow fits design-led marketing sites, studios and startups with a designer who will keep working on the site, and businesses that value visual polish over the widest choice of plugins. It is a weaker fit for owners who want to edit everything themselves with no design background, or for anyone who expects to change platforms within a few years. Compare it directly with self-hosted software in WordPress vs Webflow.
