How the filter decides
The filter applies five tests, and a platform has to pass every one you set:
- Hosting. "Hosted for me" keeps WordPress.com, Webflow, Wix, Squarespace and Shopify. "Self-hosted software" keeps WordPress from WordPress.org, WooCommerce, Drupal and Joomla. "Headless content API" keeps the headless option.
- Selling online. "Needed and built in" keeps platforms with a store included in their plans. "A plugin is fine" also keeps platforms where a free or paid add-on provides the store, such as WooCommerce for WordPress.
- Leaving later. "At least my content" keeps platforms whose official documentation describes an export of pages, posts or products in a standard format, even a partial one. Wix is left out of this choice: its CMS collections export as CSV, but Wix states that the site itself must stay on its servers, so pages built in the editor cannot be exported. "The whole site" keeps only platforms where you hold the database and every file.
- Skill. Each platform carries a skill level of low, medium or high, from our reading of what it takes to run it. The filter keeps platforms at or below the level you choose.
- Budget. The filter compares your figure with each platform's lowest paid entry price per month on the billing term shown. Prices were checked on November 4, 2026, on the source named in each platform's fact box, which is the platform's own pricing page in most cases (Drupal and Joomla are free software with no vendor pricing page, and Wix prices come from Wix's own plan guide). Self-hosted software counts as $0, because the software is free, but you will also pay a host.
The data behind the filter is the same data shown in the key-facts box on each platform guide, so the two always agree.
What the filter cannot tell you
A filter is blunt. It treats "partial export" as a pass even though Squarespace's export leaves out store pages and Webflow's code export leaves out CMS content; read the platform guide to see whether the missing parts matter to you. The skill levels are judgments, explained on the methodology page. And the budget test looks only at the entry plan, while a store or a busy site may need a higher plan; the first-year cost calculator gives a fuller picture.
The ten options in the filter
WordPress (self-hosted), WordPress.com, Webflow, Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, WooCommerce, Drupal, Joomla, and a combined headless option covering Contentful, Sanity and Strapi. Prices come from the source named in each platform guide's fact box, read on November 4, 2026.
